Bonaire Water Front Events Sports Day November 18!

Budget Marine Bonaire and Indebon Team up with Diabetes Awareness Week

Don’t leave your fitness to a New Year’s resolution

It is a year round lifestyle to lower your chances of Diabetes. November 18 we will offer many different ways to keep fit. Walk – a 6.4k / 4 mile walk. Pick your pace and go! Triathlon as a team or as an individual, sprint or mini-sprint distance! Sail or go fishing! Diabetes awareness is key to prevention. Exercise helps your body use insulin, which controls your blood sugar. It burns extra body fat, lowers blood pressure, cuts LDL (“bad”) cholesterol, and raises HDL (“good”) cholesterol. All this Lowers your chance of Diabetes, Heart disease and Stroke.

Walk and Triathlon

Pick your pace, we have a 4 mile walk, a ¼ triathlon or mini triathlon. The Walk will begin and end at the Hato Circle by Coco Beach. The start will be at 7AM. Each triathlon can be done as a team or as an individual. In the ¼ triathlon there is a swim of 750m, followed by a bike ride of 20k and a run of 5k. The mini is half of those distances. This will begin at 8:00 at Kas di Regatta.

Regatta

Sailing is also a fun way to get out on the water and workout! We have many different boats competing, including the Sunfish, optimist, Boto Piskado, Micro boats and more. There will be a variety of races. If you know how to sail, but do not have a boat, give us a shout and we can get you out on a sunfish!

Fishing Tournament

The Fishing Rules are Simple! There will be prizes for the Largest Tuna, Largest Dorado and Largest Wahoo. You can fish anywhere you like. Fish must return to the weight station at the fisherman’s pier in town between 12:00 and 4:00 by car or by boat. Fish must be cleaned for weighing. Ownership remains with the fisherman. But heart healthy folks may see if the fishermen want to sell some fresh from the boats!

Fish is a Heart Healthy Protein, high in Omega 3 and vitamin D, provides energy without lots of sugars, excellent for a healthy diet. Scientists and researchers have hypothesized that consumption of fish may reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. However, it is not clear if it is the fish alone that is a preventative as higher fish intake may instead show that you have a better all-around diet. It is recommended to eat fish at least 2 times per week.

Register

You can register at the Taste of Bonaire on Nov. 9th or on line at bonairewaterfrontevents.com. T-shirt pick up and registration at Budget Marine, November 12th – 16th 9am – 5pm and Nov 17th 9 – 12. Registration is $15 for the sailing, fishing and triathlon ($12 for kids 12 and under) and $5 for the walk.
