Breeze’n Bites – Den Laman

XpBonaire IslandLife Feature Story

Breeze’n Bites is located close to the HATO roundabout and is one of our hidden oceanfront restaurants with a beautiful view overlooking the Caribbean Sea and Klein Bonaire.

This oceanfront location has traditionally been a restaurant spot and first opened its doors as the Den Laman restaurant many years ago.

Dick’s Great Adventures

Dick Bos, who has been the owner of Breez’n Bites since 2015, first came to the island in 1990, and then again in 1995, to work as cook at the exact same spot that he can now proudly call his own.

Dick grew up with a father who owned an ice cream shop and has been working in hospitality since the age of 9. He always dreamed of becoming a chef on a deep sea ship and traveling distant waters.

After completing his education in hospitality, adventure was calling and his first position was with the Holland America Cruise Line, followed soon by Bonaire.

Returning to the Netherlands, Dick choose to work there, as well as Switzerland and Belgium, before returning to Bonaire with the opportunity to slowly take over the restaurant where he first worked on the island. But things didn’t go as expected and Dick once more followed the call of the sea, joining a South Pole cruise on a converted expedition vessel.

One of his great goals was to become the owner of his own restaurant and he moved to Spain to realize his dream. However, things turned out differently and now, richer in experience, he returned to the Netherlands to find work and recover from his set back. While working in the Netherlands, Dick befriended restaurant owners and heard about a cook position on Curacao. There he could work for several months to help out during the high season.

While on Curacao, he was offered the opportunity to take over the restaurant located at Den Laman on Bonaire. He had worked there before, but he had to act fast. After a meeting on Bonaire, Dick returned to the Netherlands to arrange all that was necessary to move to Bonaire and start his own restaurant on the island he called home and at the location where he had worked for many years.

Breeze ’n Bites

For the last 3 years, Dick has slowly been changing the restaurant into what it is today, adding kitchen equipment, restaurant furniture and training the staff to serve great food and offer professional service.

The Breeze ’n Bites view is stunning. The palm trees frame the Caribbean Sea and the small waves that hit the shore are calming and allow you to unwind quickly. Dick has created a menu that offers something to suit everyone’s taste, from fresh, crisp salads served with fresh catch of the day to burgers, pastas and meats. His personal favorite product to work with is seafood and this is reflected in his menu. Besides the regular menu which offers international cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the restaurant offers special nights.

Specials

Since it is lobster season again, fresh local lobster in a variety of styles is served every other week on Saturday and Sunday. Every other Friday, Dick offers a special Steak and Fish night serving sirloin steak with a choice of sauces and the fresh fish of the day served with a Caribbean touch. A special appetizer on his menu is home smoked fresh wahoo served on greens with a horseradish crème that you should definitely try.

New Menu

Dick is looking forward to the newest update of the menu that he will introduce in 2019. It will offer new, exciting combinations and some exciting additions. Check for updates on Breeze ‘n Bites Facebook page and at XpBonaire Island Life.
