XpBonaire Beauty Collab featuring Viv's Beauty & Da Drogist

Face masks are all the rage these days and we love them! Aside from making fun shots for Instagram, they are like power treatments that help boost your daily skincare routine by infusing high concentrations of ingredients into your skin. It’s very important to pamper your face now and than with a nice mask, especially on the island of Bonaire with all the sun. To help you with your skin care, here is some advice from your go-to-girls.

Get to work

First it’s important to know what your skin needs, sometimes it’s dry or you are having trouble with acne. So go to your beautician to ask advice about your skin type, to make sure you choose the right mask for your face. The DA drugstore in Hato, provides a lot of different facemasks to choose from for you. The ones we've tried for you, are all available at the DA. When you start your skin ritual, make sure you exfoliate your face and neck with a nice scrub. Then rinse your face with warm water and apply the mask. Don’t be gentle with the product and make sure you don’t forget your neck and cleavage. The warm water makes sure that your pores will open and the mask can do it’s work better.

Most of the masks have to work in for 10-20 minutes, you can check this normally on the back of the package. Now it’s time for you to relax and take some ‘Me-Time’, go watch your favorite serie or read a magazine/book. Rinse the mask of your face with warm water again and gently dry your face with a clean towel and you're good to go.

Types of Masks

A facemask can give your face a moisture boost, works calming or give you a mattifying effect. There are also masks that produce collagen, that's against wrinkles or masks that can exfoliate your skin. You can also try out a aftersun mask, which are very relieving if you are burned.

1. Charcoal Peel-Off Face Masks: To Minimize Pores & Blackheads

Charcoal face masks are one of the latest trends in skin care. You may have seen videos online of people peeling off a thick black mask to show clear, glowing skin. The goal of these masks is to suck out blackheads from your pores and clear your skin of toxins. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as a peel-off face mask. When you slowly remove it from your face and look at all the debris that came out of your pores, you can’t help but breathe a deeply satisfied sigh of relief. I’ve tried the Essential Daily Care face mask. To be honest with you, don’t put this one over your whole face, because it hurts big time! Only apply this one on your T-zone, so forehead, nose and chin. Learn from my mistake and don’t get your cheeks waxed. It’s a very thick structure so a little bit hard to get out of the sachet and on your face because it’s also very sticky. Make sure this mask doesn’t touch your hairline or eyebrows, because you will pull them off. And with applying the mask make sure your put a thicker layer on the edges, to make sure it’s easier taking it off when it’s dry. If you use the mask just on your T-zone it works great! Your pores are clear and clean again and free from blackheads. Wait 24 hours with sunbathing after using this mask and don’t use perfumed or alcohol based products. I would recommend using this product 1 time in the 2 weeks.

2. Cream Mask with Hyaluronic acid: Hydrates & nourishing effect for dry skin

Hyaluronic acid sounds scary, but secretly holds the key to smooth, flawless and hydrated skin. Hyaluronic Acid is naturally occurring in the human body. The substance works as a magnet for moisture, helping your cells retain as much of it as possible so that your skin feels and appears hydrated, plump and healthy. Just a single gram of Hyaluronic Acid has the impressive ability to hold up to six (yep, six) liters of water. Add to that, a super smart ability to regulate that moisture within the cells, so as not to drown them and you've got one genius ingredient. It also works perfect for the mature skin.

As we age, skin becomes thinner and more likely to dry up. This often makes wrinkles and fine lines look more prominent as well. In short, yes, you want to do everything you can to nourish and hydrate your dry skin to keep it soft, smooth and healthy. And super hydrating masks and moisturizers are your best bet. Hydrating masks in particular give a powerful burst of moisture to help heal parched skin and restore its radiance. I’ve tried the Cream Mask with Hyaluronic Acid from Dr. Van Der Hoog. I’m loving the structure of the creamy mask, We advise you to use this product while you are near a fan or air conditioning, because otherwise it will drip from your face for sure. I allow it to work in for 15 minutes and rinse my face with warm water afterwards. My skin feels nurtured, nourished, hydrated and looks glowy. Very soft and clean and satisfying feeling after using this mask. For the best results you can use this mask once a week.

3. Garnier Skinactive’s sheet mask

Sheet masks are the hype, bringing the ingredients deeper and faster into the skin than any other type of masks. Garnier Skinactive’s sheet mask ,Charcoal and Algae Tea Hydrating and Purifying Tissue Mask infused with a serum enriched with Algae, Hyaluronic Acid for skin that feels purified, comforted and looks mattified all in just 15 minutes. A great combo can be used 2 times a week to daily before night skin care.

Have fun trying out which face mask is the best for your skin! And don’t forget to relax while doing it.

Beauty Expert Tip:

If you are using a sheet mask, apply some aloe vera first. It will melt in the skin better that way. So cut some fresh aloe vera and use the gel from it on your face and than apply the sheet mask over the gel.

You can also try this one with a serum or ampoule. You will see your skin absorbs the nutrients, vitamins and minerals much better! Ampoules are also available at Viv’s Beauty Salon, choose it as an extra option during your facial.
